I think it’s both an American thing and an age thing. My fiancé and I are Swedish, and here it’s very common to be in a common-law relationship and live together (and even have kids) before getting married. We met when we were 18 and 20, and he proposed 12.5 years later, really surprised me. We’d already been living together for years, so getting engaged just felt like the natural next step and we’re super happy.
