🐈‍⬛🌲 Yule Cat 🌲🐈‍⬛ We see many strange folk customs and myths that come out to play during the Yuletide period, and one of the strangest is perhaps that of the Yule cat, a giant black cat that eats children who do not recieve gifts of new clothes for Christmas. This legend is tied in with a 13th century record about a giantess named Gryla, who steals misbehaving children and eats their flesh. Gryla is believed to be the Icelandic personification of winter, and perhaps evolved as a legend to warn children not to venture too far during this season. As with most texts dating back to the dark ages, the story is most likely much older and is rooted in ancient pagan traditions and beliefs. Some believe the tale to have come from Scotland, where there is a similar custom about revieveing new clothes at Yuletide, and others draw similarities between the Yule cat and the representation of cats being sacred throughout Norse mythology. Many ancient midwinter customs were of pagan origins, and people would also adorn themselves in animal skins and masks, a tradition we see throughout many cultures and traditions.
