@tiraofegypt: 𓁈 How did ancient Egyptians choose their last names? 𓅃 They usually didn’t have them. Most people were known by a personal name. When clarification was needed, Egyptians could add a parent’s name, occupation, title, hometown, or nickname. A man might be identified as “Sobekhotep, son of Imeny,” but his children wouldn’t automatically inherit “Imeny” as a family surname. Pharaohs followed an even more elaborate naming system. A king eventually possessed five royal names, including a birth name and a throne name, but none functioned like a modern last name. Egyptologists call these two names the nomen and prenomen. The numbers in names such as Ramesses II and Ptolemy V were also added by modern historians to distinguish rulers who shared the same name.
