@square_rutabaga: i've had a lot of profs who make the simplest arithmetic errors when solving crazy PDEs #math #calculus

People are surprised when I tell them the further you get into mathematics the less arithmetic you do

The solution is away to plug in parameters and get reasonable values. We aren't here for mental gymnastics

I think when you go on doing math you can achieve intuitive mental arithmetic subconsciously like at times you could find that you can count a number of, let's say orange or apples without even paying attention to them you make a random guess and the random guess isn't random but as subconscious one

My friends make fun of me for not being able to do mental multiplication fast despite being a math major 🤕

I think everyone in the comments is missing the point. The mental bandwidth will be taken away from the higher level problem. Do you want the cashier focused on adding up the items correctly by hand or that they should notice an item rung up as a different item that cost 100x.

I’m an engineer. I always check my mental math with a calculator. Like 98% of the time, my mental math was right. That 2% could be an issue though

I got a math degree and it was mostly proofs and writing paragraphs and theorems. Only a handful of courses had actual calculations and none if not was stuff I could do in my head. I’ve even had courses when I didn’t even need a calculator bc there was no numbers in it

my professors used to say "calculus is easy, algebra is hard, and arithmetic is just impossible". meaning that the place where you're most likely to make mistakes is in basic adding subtracting and multiplication not in the actual higher math concepts

I know someone whose exhusband would make fun of her for not being able to do mental math as fast as he could. He was sure that meant he was a super genius, and she was dumb as a box of rocks. But he had been in a math club in middle school where all they did was learn mental math tricks. When she divorced him, because he’s a psychopath, they both had to take neuropsych exams which included IQ tests. Guess which spouse was 2.13 standard deviations smarter than the other one? Yeah, not the mental math tricks dude.

memorization techniques are a technology too. so are straight edges and compasses. mathematicians have always used tech

When I was in undergrad I failed a calculus test because I did everything right with the calculus but when I was simplifying at the end I said 7-3=3

My friend… you’re way off. Having an intuitive understanding of every level of computing is a second nature. It’s like expecting to be a great novelist without knowing how to spell.

I am like this as a physics/chemistry major. If I'm only doing arithmetic and nothing more advanced, I will do mental math. Adding anything beyond that, I'm punching it into the calculator.

Speak for yourself, sister. There’s a joy in figuring out little tricks and shortcuts to do mental arithmetic that’s like solving engineering problems themselves. If you wanna do 15×17. Round 17 up to 20. Multiplied 20 by 15 and then subtract by 15×3

Big facts after engineering I can think in processes and systems. Arithmetic is quite literally an after thought.
