I heard an interpreter say that sometimes clients request SEE when they know the lyrics and kinda want to do a sing-along or follow the lyrics as they go.

You will see more ASL if the artist cooperates and sends a set list before so we can translate. If it’s more SEE it’s probably because we haven’t been given any heads up and are reading lyrics as they come!

Our job as interpreters is to match our clients. Whatever they request, we will accommodate.

As an interpreter that hasn’t done concerts yet, it depends. If we have enough time, a team, a set list, etc. we try to lean more ASL depending on the consumer’s preferences. However, there are plenty of times we aren’t given any of those things and are forced to do our best. The best we can really do is listen to previous concerts and their biggest hits to get an idea of what we might here and then plan from there. It’s a lot of in the moment decision making if we can even hear at all. Many people never give us access to an “in-ear”and will place us in front of the spear system and we struggle to hear clearly. I try to lean as ASL concept heavy as I can while following a more PSE grammar structure. Definitely not SEE u less it’s requested though.

You can request a terp for damn near anything sis 🥰 our goal is to match the language for our clients - so if you’re the only one requesting and you request English sign, that’s what we’ll do!

I have had requests for ASL, PSE, SEE, I’m there for the client and whatever they need to enjoy the show to the fullest extent. Some people prefer it to be more true to the song, lyrics, vibe, etc. Some clients have been HoH or later in life Deaf and reuested SEE. FOR ME, can’t speak for all interpreters but I do whatever the client wants. Another factor as to you mentioned was “preptime”. Some people don’t understand there are times we have to CHASE these venues down for a set list, song list, appearance list, etc. sometimes you won’t get a list until the day before or they give you the run around saying “we can’t release that”. At the end of the day for me I always try and do what the clients want while also making sure I’m doing my 100% best given the time and materials provided that are not in my control

I like to see kind of a mix of ASL and signed English. Visual, ASL concepts but finding ways to weave in the English lyrics. But more importantly, what do YOU as an audience member prefer? Your enjoyment of the show is priority!

I know with festivals there will be partners for interpretation so they'll have someone ASL and someone who translates SEE

I feel it takes a lot of practice to be fluent with asl for the songs. also, as a procurement agent, I cannot guarantee that the interpreters will have the time 😭

My ASL teacher had told me he interpreted for Addison Rae and he told me he was just reading off the lyrics and signing it because he was requested. He didn’t have time to practice.

depends on the clients, ive def had people who were clearly more english and so i went more english but others who explicitly asked for asl, id say just try to touch base with the agency or ADA folks for tbe venue or whoever you can talk to and let them know whatever your language preferences are

I've only seen interpreters doing ASL at concerts, so that's definitely interesting. Also, can you do a sign cover of that fast part in "Reunion Square" from the Warriors musical on Spotify? It's the part at the end of the song and I love it sooo much!!

could also be that the venue or the main attraction had an experience with sign language in church which is where SEE has its biggest audience.

BUT you are right most venues still book without enough time to practice or artists make last minute changes. AND for MUSIC a lot of clients ask for more SEE recent. I ask clients which they prefer and the MOST IMPORTANT is to NOT FORGET THE VIBES 🤗 🤟🏽

As an interpreter and have done concerts, if there's no specific requests then we just do what's mutually understandable for everyone (as best as we can determine, which is usually more ASL leaning PSE or visual PSE)

Hi I am Deaf and two things.… your nails are beautiful but distraction because it very long and not look professional. Second ASL is native language to Deaf so of course I want see Interpreter use ASL if possible at concert. But you are beautiful and you are doing great!

As a terp it would be a godsend to know a clients vauge preference before a concert. It’s impossible to prepare for an unknown audience and give a satisfactory product.
