@themoviemagick: Plato controversially believed that commercializing art would have disastrous consequences for society. He believed that if artists had to rely on selling their art in order to make money then they would be enticed to pander to specific audiences or the masses, and they would reject pursuing truth and beauty, in order to pander to base human instincts of division and temptation in order to increase their profits and sales. Reducing art from something that can elevate society and uplift humanity to something that leads us further astray from truth. But the pushback is that if artists need to rely on funding, they will be more susceptible to pushing propaganda for those funding their art. But what are your thoughts on this? #plato #philosophy

100% true, and we’re seeing this within anime where anime tourists will harass mangakas over fan service.

Plato's Republic also thought kids should be owned by the state and everyone above their generation in a state should be seen as their parents

Plato also believed that art should be pure in its expressive virtue. That two conflicting viewpoints shouldn’t ever be combined therein. Like joy and rage, for example. It’s actually one of Plato’s worst takes, to be honest.

That’s somewhat true but that implies that there’s art that has no cultural, political leanings and that’s just not really possible since art being a reflection of one’s mind. Who you are as a person completely depends on upbringing and environment. How different would evangelical paintings be if none of the artist were religious.

He’s not necessarily wrong yet this can also be applied to all sorts of aspects of life, everything is political. People perform and conform according to market/social pressures

He believed that popular poems and dramas make people imitate bad behavior and act worse. For Plato, the only acceptable art was that which praised the gods and virtues, which from a modern perspective, functions more like propaganda than free artistic expression. Therefore, we can say that Plato did not care about the artist's self-expression. We can even go so far as to say that what he called art is not actually art, but propaganda.

Most artist make products for consumer tumors, not art for the soul. Most artist business people, not folks making mirrors for folks to see themselves, so it’s all shallow and in vain.
