The Islamic Republic has also built an extensive system of censorship and social control. The government restricts access to information, blocks websites and platforms, and attempts to control what people can say, watch, read, and share. Young Iranians in particular have grown up knowing that their government may interfere with their personal lives and expression. Instead of trusting its citizens, the state frequently treats them as potential threats. The economy is another major failure. Iran has enormous natural resources, a highly educated population, and a strategically important location, yet millions of ordinary people struggle with inflation, unemployment, declining purchasing power, and economic uncertainty. Corruption, mismanagement, sanctions, isolation, and the prioritization of political and security institutions have all contributed to these problems. The people of Iran deserve an economy where hard work can actually provide a stable future. The Islamic Republic’s treatment of protesters and dissidents is also deeply disturbing. When citizens take to the streets to demand political or economic change, the government’s response has repeatedly involved arrests, intimidation, and force. A government should listen to legitimate grievances rather than treating its own population as an enemy. The regime’s foreign policy is another source of criticism. Rather than concentrating primarily on improving life inside Iran, the government has invested substantial political and military resources in regional conflicts and allied armed groups. This has contributed to tensions with other countries while ordinary Iranians continue facing domestic economic difficulties. A government should prioritize the welfare and future of its own people. Perhaps most frustratingly, the Islamic Republic often presents opposition to its policies as opposition to Iran itself. That is a false choice.
