@whileyouwonder: What’s the thing you’ve been told about your voice? “You’re too monotone.” “You’re too expressive.” “You sound angry.” “You sound robotic.” “You sound like you’re reading from a script.” “You sound too formal.” “You sound sarcastic when you aren’t.” Turns out, autistic communication isn’t just about what we say. It can also be about how we naturally say it. 😅 PS If doing a tone rollercoaster of ups and downs drains you of ENERGY.. that’s a hearty hint too. For my deep divers👇 Fusaroli, R., Grossman, R. These insights reflect common themes I’ve observed in clinical settings, assessment conversations, and client storytelling. It may not apply to everyone, and research is still catching up on a lot of this. ‼️ This content is for general education and shared understanding, it is not clinical advice or a diagnostic service.

I'll be talking, realize I'm being monotone, and immediately start adding inflections. And not everyone says "if you don't terribly mind, could you possibly get that thing for me?"??? 😭😂

When I don't mask, my voice is very flat, I'm honest about my pain or fatigue. But when I'm outside, I'm all smiles and bouncy and singy, and pretend that it's not that bad. I make myself sound as non-threatening, non-worrying as possible and round all the edges, to the point where it's barely even me anymore. It's exhausting but it's the only thing that helps against social anxiety.

I feel attacked by this video. I’m a vocalist, ok? *pause* Ok, yes… I was recently diagnosed autistic.

I got tired of people telling me I sound cold. I know what they need so I give it in bucket loads. They're going to have to see my overly exaggerated expressions, and hear my highly animated voice (which I adjust in real time depending on their expression). Doing it all my life, but diagnosed at around 40 years old.

I'm dyspraxic and I do this... but I have also got two accents mixed in that are fairly musical in tone... but then again I was told as a child that I didn't speak, I sang. I'm a bit cooked verbally! 🤣🤣🤣

I used to get told I was sing-songy and I used to have to work really hard to make my tone come out “right” (facial expressions included). It feels like a huge effort to communicate properly to neurotypical people. No wonder I’m drained by the end of social interactions.
