@compassioncurator: I’ve spent years rescuing animals on different continents, and one question keeps following me everywhere I go. Who are we to decide who has value? Who gave humanity the authority to determine that one life is worth protecting while another is disposable? A dog’s capacity to love doesn’t change because they’re born in Malawi instead of Los Angeles. A cow doesn’t feel pain any less because we’ve labeled them “livestock.” A pig doesn’t value their own life any less because our culture says they should. Their worth isn’t determined by our opinions, traditions, convenience, or biases. Somewhere along the way, we began acting as though humans have the right to rank life itself as if intelligence, language, or species gives us permission to decide who deserves compassion. But what if value was never ours to assign? What if every living being possesses worth that exists independently of what humans believe? The more I travel, the more I rescue, and the more I study ethics, the more convinced I become that our greatest challenge isn’t simply how we treat animals. It’s the belief that we get to decide whose life matters in the first place. Maybe compassion begins the moment we stop asking whether another being is worthy of moral consideration and start recognizing that they always were.
