That’s how I feel about archaeology! It’s so fun to hear someone reference emotions I’ve felt when handling artifacts. One time I get to examine a collection of Neanderthal-made stone tools, and the knowledge that someone possibly hundreds of thousands of years ago made this stone flake that fits so perfectly in my hand broke my brain.

horror is the more powerful genre, imo. horror covers so much that other genres can’t touch

You’ve captured my feelings entirely. I have a degree in history and love horror as well. Volunteering at a museum and working with antiques feels so eerie at times. Like I touched pamphlets from the French Revolution just yesterday. Some of the pages were darker than others, darkened by the oils on many hands. I can just imagine the pamphlets being passed between friends itching to know what was going on. It’s spooky.

both go hand in hand in my opinion, hauntings being just the yet unknown is fascinating, comprehending their perception of what's paranormal and what can be easily explained with our modern awareness, but still strikes fear. I'm Brazilian so your book would bewuite expensive for me, someone unable to work, but soon as I gather enough money through freelance I'll attempt to get it 🖤

I love this take! As someone who also has a degree in history and interest in horror and the paranormal, I view historic objects pretty much the same way. They're step away from being a portal to the past. The oldest man-made object I have is a Ptolemaic Egyptian coin and when I hold it, I try to imagine the people who also held it over the past 2000+ years and what environments it experienced. So frustrating never knowing!

I feel the same way about historical places and artifacts, ranging from simply "Oh, how cool is this" to "I can feel something here." It's strange to me that not everyone feels that way. I've been meaning to ask about when you went to Rye, specifically about how you reacted to The Mermaid. Personally, I never want to ser foot in it again. *shudder*

Exactly all this!! I just want to add, if I may, that all this makes it's way into any art form. The difficult, and subversive, views throughout history. Your parchment experience is what I feel looking closely at the edges of a Van Gogh painting where you can still see canvas. Also, Goya's drawings in Disasters of War is eye openingly horrific. They absolutely feed each other.
