Tech Sgt. Ian Patterson, a dedicated U.S. Air Force service member, tragically died on Saturday, October 17, 2026, after falling approximately 170 feet during a pregame rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Patterson, an instructor with the Tactical Air Control Party (TACP), had served in the Air Force for 15 years. He was participating in UTSA’s Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans ceremony alongside three other service members before the university’s football game against Navy. Following the accident, emergency responders rushed to his aid on the field before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Patterson was based at Nellis Air Force Base’s 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, and was originally from Fort Stewart, Georgia. Beyond his military service, Patterson was a husband and father of two young children. A friend remembered him as an amazing person, leaving behind loved ones who must now face an unimaginable loss. The Air Force confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation. A fundraiser has also been announced to support those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. 🕊️ Our heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to Ian Patterson’s wife, children, family, friends, and fellow service members. May they find strength, comfort, and peace during this devastating time. His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, Tech Sgt. Ian Patterson. 🇺🇸 #IanPatterson #USAirForce #MilitaryFamily #GoneTooSoon #RestInPeace
