For context: In Kaiser Wilhelm’s time, it was customary during state visits for monarchs to wear the uniform of the other country. For example, Kaiser Wilhelm was sometimes seen in a British admiral’s uniform, while King George wore a German admiral’s uniform. Likewise, the Ottoman Sultan might wear a German uniform, while Kaiser Wilhelm wore an Ottoman uniform. Today people may laugh at such pictures, but influencers do essentially the same thing when they wear, display, or try out someone else’s brand to signal affiliation, approval, or connection.
