@mediumaprylnicole: To be clear, if I’m in a live and I see someone being harmed, I’m going to speak up regardless of what the medium thinks of me personally. My responsibility is to protect people, especially in a space that has little to no regulation. The person receiving the reading may not even recognize the subtle ways their nervous system is being activated in the moment. And even if they do, many people won’t speak up because they don’t want to draw more attention to themselves or challenge the reader publicly. Most people want to be accepted, not singled out, especially when they’re already in a vulnerable position. That’s why it’s so important for those of us who recognize harm to advocate for them. This isn’t hypothetical. Throughout the years, there have been people who have experienced profound psychological harm after irresponsible statements made by readers. That’s why ethical responsibility is so important. As mediums, we are accountable not only for what we say, but also for when we say it, how we say it, and whether it should be said at all. My concern is that if our community continues to ignore ethical standards, outside regulation may eventually follow. History has shown that when an industry cannot hold itself accountable, governing bodies often step in. That could fundamentally change, or even limit, the freedom many of us have to practice mediumship. If you witness harm in these spaces, don’t be afraid to speak up. Imagine if it were your loved one sitting there while deeply private information, such as their sexual assault, was shared publicly. I would be absolutely mortified. Protecting people should always come before protecting a medium’s ego.
