Yes to most of this! But a personal following on any platform shouldn’t equate to me being able to do the job. I don’t have to be an influencer to do SMM. Portfolio and work experience should def be enough. The line is being blurred between wanting to keep personal life personal and being able to execute job responsibilities

I’ll add on - BUILD A PORTFOLIO!!!! Especially if you want to be working on the content side of things. Every single interview I’ve had has said that my portfolio is what brought me to the top of their stack. No college degree, no fancy website. Just my work on a canva template. Link it in every email & bio! I get recruiters reaching out all the time!

All of these are correct except having a social media presence. You do not need to be a content creator to work in social media, those are not the same thing.

Ik so many people in social media marketing who never went school for it and they always tell me it just happened and it’s disheartening to me who went to school, studied did the internships and actually understand strategies and can’t even get an interview or good compensation but they pay people with a lot of followers who barely know real marketing.

I agree with so many of your points except one! As a social media strategist/email marketing manager, my personal socials are not always regularly updated. When I have a ton of clients, it becomes almost tiresome or like I’m still working when I make stuff for myself. In a way, I’ve lost the love for it for my personal life. But I put my all into my clients. I don’t think it’s completely fair to judge a person’s personal socials when they can do great work for others 🤷♀️. But finding a job has been difficult because the value has gone down with so many people offering to be a content creator instead of leading with strategy.

I’ve worked in social media for 10+ years. All of this! When I have hired for junior social positions, I looked for knowledge and passion. And also, show me your strategy. How do you drive business results on social? How do you use the platform features to grow a business’s following? How are you strategically collaborating with creators or other business’s to grow engagement and reach? It’s not only what you can show that you know. It’s also how you position it to an employer. Just saying you can do what you are listing here is not enough to stand out.

I have an associate degree in digital and social media marketing and went back and got a bachelor’s degree in marketing and still can’t get hired but I’m don’t have a lot of experience (just finished school in March) so I’m trying to build a portfolio and get experience it’s so hard
