What if it’s simply to prepare them for when they will actually have to thrive on their own in the world?

My mom demanded over 20% of my paychecks when I got my first real job. After buying myself food and paying my cell phone bill, I really didn’t have anything. People used to ask me how I worked a full time job but didn’t have any money. My mom constantly pocket watched me while I lived with her. The moment I treated myself to some new clothes to wear to my new job (after the manager complained about my wardrobe) after YEARS of wearing the same clothes, my mom stuck her hand out and demanded her cut. After 5 months on the job, she told me I needed to get my own place because she was moving to a different state. It was a blessing in disguise

They definitely feel you owe them something. And that you’re a burden fr. It’s insidious. If you earn more, they believe you should give more than they contribute. Meanwhile they had their whole life to get their things together

I respectfully disagree. I believe if they are adult children living in the home, they should help out with the finances because they would have to do this on their own so you are in fact helping them.

My parents had me giving them 200 dollars a month on 600 dollars a month rent. Mind you my dad was a cleaning contractor and was cleaning the landlord's other units for an additional 200 dollars off the rent. I was working 40 hours a week, honors and AP classes. I gained 30 pounds from stress/emotional eating and I was burnt out.

My dad made me pay rent when I was struggling paying for my own school that he did not help me with. I will never understand.

I don’t charge my kids rent, but some people charge because they are anticipated in trying to retire one day and don’t want to continue taking care of people who are grown when kids live in your house. After a certain age. They are considered adults and they can kinda do what they want to do so it’s best if they get on their own feet and move out and take care of themselves, but if they are at home and the parents need that help because they are using more water, electricity even more groceries than the kids need to contribute and if they’re at home and they’re not working, they need to go get a job. There has to be a definitive plan and taking care of your kids for the rest of your life. Cannot be what is unacceptable message to be sending to these kids after 18 you’re not a kid anymore and if your parents like to stay in their house and don’t charge you anything you need to be accepted in some type of house and doing things to make their life easier not just being a parasite.

And I want my kids to be able to sustain their own lives outside of living with me so me having them pay a little bit of money is teaching the responsibility as well as giving them the opportunity to save up so that they can move out of their own. I don’t want my kids living with me forever.

As an elderly working parent who pays rent, does all cooking cleaning, and supplies groceries. My 27 yo son who also works most certainly should help with living expence. A grown son will learn to be a deadbeat with 0 financial responsibilities.

It’s not about control cause I don’t control anything. They do as an adult besides helping out that they can’t eat all my food leave messes for me to clean up and live and use all of the utilities and things of that nature and not assist I don’t ask for much but it’s something.
