its because its not just bending the opposite element its the opposite of there personality roku said he had difficulty wity water like how aang was with earth. but korra had all 3 almost practically ready for use just only to be trained her hardest element was air because she had to change her way of thinking too

He has to become a different person, Earthbending is opposite to Air. Requiring a rigidness that is absent/supressed in Airbenders. This is why he struggled with it so much. Airbending is very “go with the flow” while Earthbender is very “be the dam that blocks the flow”.

Have you noticed aang uses earth bending way more than the other elements of its either air or earth. And earth was the most difficult for him to learn. And in LOK after korra learns air bending she ends up using it way more than the other elements and just like aang that element was the most difficult to learn. I love these little details

Keep in mind: earth was his hardest element to learn bc its opposite of air bending, everything he grew up learning toph had to break down bc earth bending was not only his opposing element but also opposed his ideals
