Welcome back to the grow along. Here are some jobs you can be getting on with this week. If your runner beans and French beans have good roots and a couple of sets of true leaves it’s time to plant them out. To make the wigwam push 4 or 5 2m long sticks into the ground in a circle, about 30cm between each stick. Tie at the top to secure. Plant the beans around the wigwam structure, 1-2 plants to each stick. Water them in and keep checking for slug damage so that you can intervene if needed! Support your broad beans. As your beans get taller they may start flopping on your other veg. Make a simple support structure by pushing 4 sticks into the ground and tying string around the sticks. Go round a couple of times so there’s support at the top and bottom. Pot up your tomatoes. To maximise the crop in this bed we’ve got peas in before our tomatoes. But this means that by the time the peas have finished the tomatoes will be quite mature plants. If your tomatoes have roots coming out the bottom of the pots, the leaves are starting to go yellow or there are lots of roots around the outside of the pot, it may be time to pot your tomatoes up. Put them into a slightly larger pot with some nice rich compost and water them in. Sow your courgettes and squashes. Push the seeds into the compost on their side, about 1cm deep. Cover them over and give them a water. Courgettes and squashes get big quickly, so use nice big pots. Remember to enjoy your harvests! By now you should have some radishes, salad crops, and maybe even some peas. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
