@yakuptastravel: What magnificence 😮 Igreja da Venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco da Penitência is a historic Catholic church located in the city center of Rio de Janeiro, on the hill of Morro de Santo Antônio. It began to be built in the 17th century by a lay brotherhood associated with the Franciscan order, and its construction was completed between approximately 1657 and 1733. The church is especially famous for its rich Baroque interior decoration. The interior is covered with gold-plated wood carvings, ornate altars, and detailed ceiling paintings. For this reason, it is considered one of the most important examples of Baroque art in Brazil. The large ceiling painting was created by the Portuguese painter Caetano da Costa Coelho and is considered one of the first ceiling paintings in Brazil to use perspective illusion.
