When a fearful avoidant falls in love, it can be very real. They can fall deeply. They can believe in the future they’re describing to you. When they say, “I love you. I want this. I see a future with you,” they may genuinely mean every word in that moment. I’m not talking about intentional manipulation or narcissistic abuse. I’m talking about the fearful-avoidant person who desperately wants intimacy while simultaneously being terrified of it. That’s what makes this attachment dynamic so heartbreaking. They can want the relationship and become overwhelmed by what the relationship awakens inside them. The closer you become, the more there is to lose. The more deeply they’re loved, the more their deepest wounds can surface: “I’m going to fail them.” “I’m not enough.” “Eventually they’ll see what’s wrong with me.” “They’re going to leave me.” And sometimes their nervous system finds one solution: Leave first. They create distance from the very intimacy they were longing for. That doesn’t mean every fearful avoidant secretly loves the person they left. And attachment style never excuses dishonesty, betrayal, or harmful behavior. But it can help explain something incredibly painful: Someone can have genuine feelings for you and still lack the emotional capacity to sustain a healthy relationship with you. Both things can be true. So perhaps you don’t need to make them a monster in order to let them go. Understand them. Have compassion for the wounds underneath the behavior. And then release them. Because their healing cannot become your assignment. Love them if you still love them. Bless them. Set them free. And give yourself the love and safety you kept hoping they would eventually become capable of giving you. Sometimes understanding why someone couldn’t choose the relationship is exactly what allows you to finally choose yourself. Get free 72-hour access to my Manifest Abundant Love Masterclass and discover the four psychic shifts that help you heal attachment wounds, release the past, return to wholeness, and become available for secure, soul-aligned love.
