Some use 10. Others go as high as 12 or even 14. So what does the standard say? According to common BS-based practice: ✅ 1:5 mix for block laying mortar ≈ 10 head pans of sharp sand to 1 bag of cement. ✅ 1:4 mix for stronger applications such as plastering ≈ 8 head pans of sharp sand to 1 bag of cement. Using too much sand may reduce mortar strength and affect the bond between blocks. Good engineering is not about using more materials.
