The Nissan 180SX, designated by its chassis code S13, is a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe that was produced by the Japanese automaker from 1989 to 1998. Named for its 1.8-liter engine displacement at launch (the "180" referencing the CA18DE powerplant), the car was designed as a stylish, affordable grand tourer aimed primarily at the Japanese and North American export markets—where it was badged as the Nissan 240SX, albeit with a larger 2.4-liter truck-derived engine. However, it is the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) version, with its high-revving, forced-induction powerplants, that cemented its legendary status in automotive folklore. The 180SX shared its platform with the Nissan Silvia S13, yet featured a distinct identity through its unique fastback hatchback body style and, most iconically, its pop-up headlights—a design element that would become its visual trademark. The car underwent several evolutionary phases throughout its lifespan. The early models (1989–1990) were powered by the 1.8-liter CA18DET turbocharged inline-four, producing around 175 horsepower. However, the turning point came in 1991 with the introduction of the Type-II and later the Type-X variants, which saw the fitment of the legendary SR20DET engine—a 2.0-liter, 16-valve, DOHC turbocharged inline-four with an intercooler, generating 205 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 203 lb-ft of torque. This engine, combined with a near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, a multi-link rear suspension, and a lightweight chassis tipping the scales at just over 1,200 kilograms, turned the 180SX into a weapon of mass acceleration and cornering prowess. The SR20DET became synonymous with bulletproof reliability and immense tunability, capable of handling over 400 horsepower on stock internals with the right supporting modifications. The later models (1995–1998), known as the Kouki (Phase III) versions, featured revised aerodynamics, a more aggressive front bumper, and the iconic 'brick' style rear spoiler, making them the most desirable iteration among collectors today. The 180SX is perhaps most famous for its cultural impact on the drifting scene. Throughout the 1990s, it became the chariot of choice for street racers on the Wangan Expressway and mountain touge passes, as well as professional drifters in the D1 Grand Prix. Its predictable lift-off oversteer and the responsiveness of the SR20 turbo made it the ultimate canvas for drift modifications. The car's ability to slide with grace, combined with its aggressive, low-slung stance, turned it into an anime icon, most notably as the beloved "Sil-Eighty" replica in the Initial D series. Inside, the cabin was a product of its era—simple, functional, and driver-focused. A sparse dashboard, analog dials, supportive bucket seats, and a triple-pod gauge cluster (on the later models) gave the driver everything they needed and nothing they didn't. It lacked the complicated electronics of modern sports cars; there was no traction control, no stability management, and no drive-mode selectors. Just a clutch pedal, a gated five-speed manual shifter, and the visceral connection between the driver's right foot and the tarmac. Despite its discontinuation in 1998, the 180SX has seen a massive resurgence in value and appreciation over the last decade. Clean, unmolested examples, especially the rare 1997–98 Type-X models with the factory aero kit and rare two-tone color schemes, now command auction prices north of $40,000 USD—a far cry from their original $20,000 price tag. The car has transcended its role as mere transportation to become a blue-chip collectible within the JDM market. It represents the golden era of Japanese performance: an analog machine built for drivers who value mechanical rawness over digital displays. #nissan #180sx #drive #fypシ #blender #cgi #blender3d #edit
