The statement attributed to Sheikh Shaibu Armiyao, calling for the arrest and interrogation of an Imam because he spoke about the Islamic position on punishment for blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), deserves careful reflection. There is an important difference between explaining a religious teaching and inciting people to commit violence. If an Imam discusses what Islamic scholars have historically said about blasphemy and its legal consequences, that discussion should not automatically be interpreted as a personal call for Muslims to attack or harm anyone. At the same time, religious leaders have a responsibility to communicate sensitive subjects carefully, particularly when their words could be misunderstood or taken as encouragement for individuals to act outside the law. Any genuine threat, incitement, or encouragement of violence should be addressed appropriately by the authorities. However, calling for the arrest of a religious scholar simply because he discussed a controversial aspect of Islamic jurisprudence risks discouraging legitimate religious discourse. The better approach is to examine the actual words, context and intention of the speaker rather than assuming that explaining a traditional ruling amounts to promoting violence. Muslims and non-Muslims alike should be able to engage in difficult conversations about religion without fear of being criminalized merely for discussing established religious teachings. If there is disagreement with an Imam’s interpretation, scholars and community leaders should respond with knowledge, evidence and dialogue. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught Muslims to uphold justice and wisdom even when emotions are high. Therefore, the focus should be on preventing violence, promoting lawful conduct and encouraging responsible speech—not unnecessarily turning theological disagreement into a demand for arrest.
