@the_under_report: Sooo let’s talk about attacks on the water supply. . . . . . . For the most part they aren’t what most people imagine. Poisoning is way harder than you think… instead . . . . It’s more about disrupting physical infrastructure or occupying systems. . . . Hit the link in the bio for free intel. #minnesota #geopolitics #watersupply #theunderreport #untiedstates
America is poisoning its own water supply already 🤣🤣🤣

Who would want to see distrust in the state of Minnesota? Hmm

A LOT of those PLCs are run on archaic (yet connected) SCADA systems that seem pretty vulnerable.

I work in industrial controls and its a little scary what an intruder can do with these systems. They aren't very secure for what they are and typically they allow remote read/write access for anyone with generic login credentials that are often shared company wide or even across multiple companies. Those generic credentials often let you modify the actual control programs. You could, for example, slightly alter the chem treatment control parameters to stop proper treatment, or shut valves and blast pumps until the impellers/motors fail. It's worse in factories who raely think about being targeted. Lots of factories have huge ovens, and you can trick an oven into thinking it is 2000 degrees when its actually 3000. They'll melt or blow up their ceramic lining and now the factory is shut down for a week or two. All you need to do that is some basic social engineering

The power grid seems far more likely to cause real issues. Overloading key transfer lines would cause more widespread issues that are harder to fix.

Don’t you think Iran would be more picky with their hacks and focus on red states (like Canada)? It seems like they understand who’s on their side and most unhappy with this war and our current administration

My dad was a class A water plant operator for 40 years, taught the training classes and was a tech prodigy. He passed in ‘23 and I’d love to know his thoughts on this.

Not me totally thrilled I'm on a non-shared well.
Is this because many municipalities haven't taken cybersecurity as seriously as they should or are Iran and China just that good at hacking (or should I say, we have a lot of people susceptible to social engineering that work in municipalities...)

just about right - hacking a PLC in water supply would nuisance, but not a serious concern. I'm not sure why the news can't say that.
