@gracetruthdaily: If I Forgive Them, Do I Have to Let Them Back Into My Life? Seeker: Can I ask you something? If someone deeply hurt me, and I forgive them, does that mean I have to let them back into my life? Grace: Many Christians struggle with this. Jesus did teach us to forgive. But forgiveness and rebuilding a relationship are not the same thing. Forgiveness means you release hatred, pain, and bitterness from your heart. But reconciliation requires repentance, change, and trust to be rebuilt. Some relationships can be restored. But some relationships must remain at a distance. That does not mean you have not forgiven. Seeker: But sometimes I feel guilty. I wonder if keeping distance means I’m not loving enough. Grace: Jesus never asked you to stay close to people who are destroying you. The Lord Jesus said: “Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” Luke 6:28 KJV You can pray for them. You can hope they repent. But that does not mean you must allow them to keep damaging your life. You can forgive someone without giving them the same access to your life. Forgiveness is mercy. But boundaries are wisdom. Seeker: So I can forgive them, but still protect myself? Grace: Yes. That is not hatred. That is wisdom. Jesus said: “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16 KJV You can love people without trusting everyone. Kindness is not naivety. Grace does not mean having no boundaries. A true follower of God has mercy, but also wisdom. Seeker: I thought forgiveness meant pretending nothing happened. Grace: No. The gospel teaches us to forgive, but not to cover up sin. God loves peace, but not peace bought by sacrificing truth. You can let go of pain, and still set boundaries. You can pray for someone, and still keep your distance. Do not confuse forgiveness with allowing yourself to be hurt again. Seeker: That gives me peace. Grace: God sees your heart. He knows the pain you have carried. He does not want hatred to control you. But He also does not want you to be destroyed. So forgive before God. Release the bitterness. Pray for healing. But also ask God for wisdom and discernment. The goal is not revenge. The goal is freedom. Freedom from bitterness, fear, and confusion. Freedom to follow God with a clean and peaceful heart.
