@featherandflockchickens: How you can tell if an egg is fertile before it's incubated. The difference is found on the yolk. A fertile egg has a small white "bullseye" or donut-shaped spot called the blastoderm. An infertile egg has a tiny solid white dot called the blastodisc. Both eggs are perfectly fine to eat, the only difference is that a fertile egg has the potential to develop into a chick if it's incubated under the right conditions.
