Love is not always an intimate type of love. I believe these two had a bond like platonic soulmates. She understood him on another level that James and the others couldn’t. And while he did ruin that bond, it never left for him. He accepted her as a potter.

When people start to understand characters apart from surface level thoughts, I'll die happy. Snape's character is so mischaracterized, he was not a good person but you cannot deny that he had emotions and cared deeply for Lily. That care wasn't obsession, it was born out of loneliness and not having a community growing up. Lily was the only good in his life, he loved her whether it was platonic or romantic, it was sincere. She was his best (and only) friend.
