When I was very new on city council, I used to think Te Reo Māori on signs was purely symbolic and ‘feel good’. What I’ve learnt over the years at kura reo is that it’s about normalisation and status. Countries that revitalise their reo give it visual priority. One day this will be us, everywhere. I remember going to Amsterdam when I was 20 and seeing like 8 different languages on signs. I feel like the people who fixate and feel threatened by the presence of Te Reo Māori only lash out because they don’t understand and they don’t know who they are. I’ve never felt angry or confused because I didn’t understand signs around me. In fact, I picked up heaps of Cymraeg just from seeing it all around me. That’s the point!
