I know the fairytale doesn’t exist, and honestly, it’s been hard to deconstruct that mindset. Of course I want love. I want someone who truly sees me. But I’m not about to convince myself that another person can make me whole. Love can enrich your life, but it shouldn’t be the thing your sense of self depends on.

Humans are social creatures, we crave connection. I think people jump to the extreme of demonizing love and romance because they do not know how to handle their personal feelings around heartbreak, rejection, and growing up then realizing that a relationship needs to be healthy. It's like instead of realizing that you can both want love, love yourself, have self-worth, and have the relationship of your dreams they choose to just give up on it entirely and because they have complex feelings surrounding love they choose to shame people who are more open about their desires. Relationships are work, especially healthy relationships, and no person is flawless. I think it's also because for many people relationships have become more about checking off boxes on a checklist instead of being with someone you can spend the rest of your life with in a healthy manner.

I’m convinced that the people who demonize do so because they’re afraid they’re never going to find it for themselves. So they resent everyone else who is actively looking and manage to find love.
