A Day Before Yesterday, I Came Across A Facebook Post By Someone I Know Very Well Here In Jos, And, Quite Frankly, I Was Deeply Shocked By What I Read. From His Argument, It Appeared That He Sees Shari'ah As Fundamentally Incompatible With The Modern System Of Governance, And Even Went So Far As To Suggest That Shari'ah Fails To Guarantee Equal Rights, Whereas Democracy, Through The Principle Of Universal Franchise, Gives Every Individual The Direct Right To Elect And To Be Elected. What Troubled Me Most Was Not Merely The Conclusion He Reached, But The Fundamental Misconception Of Shariah Upon Which His Argument Was Built. When A Concept Is Misunderstood At Its Very Foundation, It Is Only Natural That The Conclusions Drawn From It Will Also Be Fundamentally Misguided. This Is Precisely Why There Is A Pressing Need For Serious Public Enlightenment And Intellectual Engagement On These Matters. Otherwise, Akwai Matsaloli Ta Ko Ina, Wallahi. If Such Misconceptions Are Left Unchallenged, We May Gradually Witness People Throwing Themselves Into The Garbage Heap Of Nihilism, Not Because They Have Studied Sharah And Rejected It, But Because They Have First Encountered A Distorted Representation Of What Sharīʿah Actually Is.
