ZFS all the way. Shrinking and growing volumes is a no-no in storage administration. You never do this. This is why ZFS beats everything. A volume should only be created or destroyed for consistency.

some of this is straight up wrong. additionally, btrfs is still relatively new and zfs isn't typically used for consumer systems.

xfs can support encryption paired with LUKS, and it supports adding and removing drives with LVM. it's even less of a hassle than it is with ZFS.
