@jeremyallandmd: Twenty-five years ago today, Korey Stringer died from exertional heat stroke during NFL training camp. His death helped change how football approaches the start of the season. NFL players do not immediately jump into full-speed, full-pad practices. They gradually acclimate their bodies to the heat and workload. Our kids deserve the same protection. Being “in shape” does not mean an athlete is acclimated to practicing in August heat. Fall sports should begin with a gradual increase in: • Practice duration and intensity • Equipment and protective gear • Heat exposure • Contact and conditioning demands Athletes also need frequent hydration and cooling breaks, appropriate recovery time, and practice modifications based on the conditions. Parents, ask your child’s coach: **“What is your heat-acclimatization policy?”** There should be a clear answer. Heat illness is preventable, but only when safety plans are in place before the first practice begins. Save this and send it to another sports parent as fall practices get underway. #HeatSafety #YouthSportsSafety #SportsParents #YouthFootball #FallSports #ExertionalHeatStroke #KoreyStringer #PlayTheLongGame

My son’s school does all summer long strength and conditioning. Some indoor, some outdoor but it keeps them in shape and it keeps them acclimated to the horrible Texas heat 110°.
