Today has been an emotional roller coaster. Daisy Mae was born blind just a little over a week ago. She came to us when she was only three days old, and we took her straight to the veterinarian. After examining her, they confirmed both of her eyes had ruptured. There was no hope of saving her vision. The veterinarian asked me, “What is your goal?” My answer was simple. “I want her to live without pain.” That’s it. We scheduled surgery for Friday to remove both eyes so she could finally be free from the infection and pain she has been living with. Today we went back for blood work to make sure she was healthy enough for surgery. Then everything changed. The veterinarian came back into the room and told us they had bad news. Because of the severity of the infection, there could be complications during surgery that they weren’t equipped to handle. They told us they couldn’t perform the operation. My heart sank. I asked one question… “Where can I go to help her?” They recommended a specialist in Edmond, Oklahoma. They made the call, and thankfully the specialist agreed to see her immediately. So we loaded up and made the three-hour drive. After examining Daisy Mae, the specialist came in to talk with me. He was honest. He said he had ethical concerns about doing the surgery because he worried about what her quality of life would be without eyes. And honestly… I understood exactly where he was coming from. But I opened my heart to him. I told him that animals like Daisy Mae are the very reason Clear Creek Adventure Ranch exists. We have blind animals , animals with disabilities, and animals that others might overlook. We don’t measure a life by what it can’t do… we look at what it can do. I told him that if an animal crosses my path and I have the ability to help, then I believe that’s exactly what I’m supposed to do. I also assured him that we fully understand the lifelong responsibility that comes with caring for her. After our conversation, he smiled and said something that gave me so much hope. He believes she’s healthy. Other than her eyes, he thinks she’s going to do just fine. So tonight, Daisy Mae is staying at the hospital on IV antibiotics, and if everything goes as planned, she will have surgery tomorrow. We weren’t able to get an estimate before the billing office closed. Our local veterinarian estimated around $2,000, and I’m assuming this surgery will likely be somewhere around that or more. But we’ll figure it out. We always do. Thank you… from the bottom of our hearts… for believing in our mission. Your kindness has allowed animals like Daisy Mae to have a chance when so many never get one. You aren’t just supporting a nonprofit. You’re giving a voice—and a future—to the voiceless. Please keep little Daisy Mae in your prayers.
