Hrmm,,, honestly, I think the love measurement machine doesn’t only measure romantic love. Throughout the episode, we sort of see that the machine is faulty, but it also gives people enough courage to “confess” their feelings (that people would naturally be unwilling to say). We see this with the two bodyguards at first, where one of them expresses their admiration for the other for supporting him through the war, and later we see them having fun playing go together. With Yosuke and Izo (the bodyguard), I feel like Izo’s feelings are more parental or rooted in admiration than romantic. It’s constantly being reiterated that Izo has cared for Yosuke since he was a child (official website + the episode), and most of Izo’s flashbacks focus on Yosuke as a kid. Izo is naturally nonchalant about whatever Yosuke does, but he also never goes out of his way to express how he feels because their relationship is strictly professional. I also think the main point of the episode was to show the different kinds of love—or Liebe—that appear in our lives (romantic love, familial love, admiration, friendship, etc). It also furthers the whole point about how electricity is able to bring everyone together. Gulp. Sorry for the ramble though,,, this week’s episode was super duper good…. [embarrassed]
