@overruledlife: Would you visit an abandoned village… if you knew the mosquitoes would eat you alive? 🦟😅 We rented a boat in Ocracoke and headed to Portsmouth Island—one of North Carolina’s abandoned villages on the Outer Banks. It was one of the coolest places we’ve visited all summer… until we realized we’d made one huge mistake. We did have bug spray… it was sitting in my beach bag on the boat. 🤦🏼♀️ By the time we realized how bad the mosquitoes were, we’d already wandered too far into the village to go back for it. We spent about an hour exploring the old homes, the post office (I loved the wanted posters from a 1920s train heist and murder!), and the church—all while getting absolutely eaten alive. I didn’t get any footage from the village because I was too busy swatting mosquitoes. When we finally gave up and ran back to the boat, another tour group had just arrived… wearing full mosquito netting. The captain reminded everyone to put on bug spray before they headed out. 😑 We looked at each other like… well, that would’ve been good to know an hour ago. 😂 Lesson learned: Never visit Portsmouth Island in the summer without bug spray. This is the first of many videos from our all-summer, solar-powered, off-grid beach camping adventure.
