Sometimes I don’t miss words. I miss touch. Not the dramatic kind. Not the kind you only see in movies. I miss the quiet kind. A hand finding mine without asking. A hug that lasts a little longer than usual. A shoulder to lean on after a difficult day. The feeling of someone gently brushing my hair away from my face. People underestimate how healing touch can be. How one embrace can calm a mind that has been restless for weeks. How a forehead kiss can say, “You’re safe,” without speaking a single word. There are days when loneliness isn’t about being alone. It’s about realizing that no one has held your hand for a long time. No one has pulled you a little closer. No one has reminded your heart what it feels like to be someone’s comfort. We learn to live without touch. We convince ourselves that we don’t need it. That we’ll get used to the distance. But the truth is, some parts of us are meant to be soothed, not with explanations, but with warmth. Sometimes I don’t want advice. I don’t want solutions. I don’t even want a conversation. I just want someone to wrap their arms around me and let me forget, even for a moment, how heavy everything feels. Maybe that’s why I miss tenderness so much. Because touch has a language that words can never learn. It tells you, “I’m here.” “You don’t have to carry this alone.” “You can rest now.” And perhaps that is all the heart has been quietly asking for this whole time.
