I'm not a plant person at all, but my first thought is chili powder in the soil.
I'm like 95% sure squirrels can taste spicy, and like 43% sure it won't harm the trees (maybe Google it lol)

Have you tried putting up a small sign that says “no squirrels”? Just a thought :)

I sprinkled crushed eggshells on one of my garden beds (for the nutrients) last fall and I noticed the squirrels didn’t dig in it over the winter. I haven’t tested it with pots yet, but it may be worth trying.

We put chicken wire covering the pot so they can’t dig. You’d need to cut it around the tree.

Outside of others' suggestions, you could also make sure they are on an elevated surface that is slick/difficult to climb and can't be easily jumped on top of. If you have them all on the same thing, you could use a fine mesh to cover all of them at once (maybe like a mosquito net? that hopefully they won't/can't chew through) Luckily my squirrels don't get into my trees but I have a couple toads that do it pretty frequently and just hang out "underground" in their holes.😅 Luckily they usually go for the strawberries instead of the trees though

I have had good luck deterring rats, squirrels and other small mammals with cayenne pepper.
If you get a lot of rain, you might wanna spread a little vaseline, and then sprinkle it with cayenne to hold it in place.
They usually only go for it once and then never come back. But sometimes you have to reapply a couple times.

Your squirrel is my cat. I went to Lowe’s and bought a bag of smooth pebbles to cover the soil. And my problem is solved. Maybe yours could be, too.

I've put metal screening (like window screening) over mine and just kind of bend the screen into the shape of the pots and taped it down with duct tape. the squirrels in my neighborhood are relentless and that stopped them! : )

can you put netting over the soil? you can still water through it and sunlight can get through but the squirrels can't

I'd build a cage for the trees. 😄 Like a greenhouse with strong netting instead of glass. That's what my sister is building to keep out the elk. 😆

So, sounds kinda strange, but it has helped more than expected. 🤣 Squirrels go crazy over green pine cones! They eat them like corn on the cob! 🤣 🐿️Keeps them entertained & a snack! 😋
If you have access to any pine trees , it's fun to forage them also! I love the squirrel family here. They know us now and i love watching them play & go wild over the green pinecones.
