Everybody in the world is entitled to their own opinions, so I have no right to tell them they’re wrong for believing in one. There comes a fine line between opinions and objective truth, however, and I think many people tend to blur the line between these two types of understandings. I myself still struggle ocassionally with determining what category certain thoughts I see fall into. I am an extremely opinionated person, and I can write an esssay regarding just about any media I see or of a topic I’m just interested in. Admittedly, though, this leads to me being irrationally upsetted when I see certain viewpoints of others that run extremely counter to my belief. The fact that we have differing thoughts itself doesn’t cause me any discomfort, but sometimes their reasoning seems incomprehensible or they came to a comclusion that I legitimately cannot understand in any capacity. An example is regarding the use of artificial intelligence, which in general is a topic that I’m rather passionate about. I have the opinion that any sort of image made entirely by generative AI cannot be considered as art in any way — yet, obviously — there are quite a lot of people in this world who disagree. I see this subject matter as having a objective conclusion, but is that itself also considered subject. I’m sure there’s someone out there who thinks generative AI images “objectively” can be considered art. If I say they’re wrong, am I trying to prove a point or nullify their standpoint by trying to coerse them into following mine? If everyone has a different view of objectivity, what can be considered objective at all? Is objectivity a general consensus agreed upon by most people? Can any sort of media be called “the objective best?” Breaking Bad is the highest rated TV drama, but can you say it’s “objectively” the best show ever made? Can the concept of objectivity only apply to laws established in nature. Gravity objectively exists. The sun is objectively heavier than the Earth. Of course, objectivity is synonymous with indisputible facts, but — if that’s the case — why are there so many discussions and arguments around the world stemming from different opinions? Wouldn’t the only reason you argue over an opinion be because you want them to see your “objective” perspective? I think the frustration comes from many people taking it for granted, in a sense. If you were to say “I like coffee more than tea.” I literally cannot argue with you because it’s simply your opinion, but if you said “Coffee is better than tea.” then that already plants an unpleasant impression of you into my mind, which — of course — can lead to hostility. I know it seems nauseatingly redundant to have to put “I think” before nearly any personalized statement, but that really can be a wake-up call for people who don’t realize how impactful that slight interaction can be. I’m no saint, and I’m a victim to being obnoxious on both sides of this hypothetical before, but I think it’s evident that I am at least aware of that. That isn’t an excuse — however — and I do hope I can alter some aspects of my feelings regarding this subject.
