@hadas_lederer: I know not all therapist know how to treat ocd but shouldn’t they at least know the symptoms?? #ocd #ocdawareness #MentalHealth #erp #fypシ
I have been in therapy since I way 16 years old. I was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Over the years I have seen so many therapist. I have done so much Talk therapy CBT therapy and nothing was helping. I got to the point where I was so afraid to leave my house and for a long time I couldn’t leave my house. Sadly, I felt like once I was labeled with these diagnosis every therapist I seen after that never really looked into why I wasn’t getting better. I ended up coming across a video about ERP therapy and how it can help with panic disorder so I reached out to a therapist specialize in ERP. At my first appointment, my ERP therapist diagnosed me with OCD. I am 49 years old and after 30+ years I finally have a diagnosis and a treatment plan that is helping. Like you I’ve had therapists tell me to wear a rubber band and snap myself hold ice in my hands. If I was afraid to leave the house, a therapist told me to make sure I have someone with me at all times. When I think back to all the therapy I went through and all of the different “tools“ I was given in therapy to“help” my anxiety were actually what was making my OCD worse. It makes me sad to think back to how much life I actually lost because a lot of therapist don’t understand OCD.

therapists have always told me not to push away my intrusive thoughts and to just accept them which has been extremely detrimental because if i don't push them away i WILL spiral on them

Literally handing you compulsions on a silver platter. ESPECIALLY the rubber band one that’s insane

Out of curiosity what would help ? What do u think should have been recommended to help these things? I wanna be a therapist and I’m interested in psychology so I just wanna hear what would be more helpful

Talk therapy for OCD? They’re never equipped for anything besides anxiety and depression

This is why we need therapists to be universally trained to understand OCD even if they don’t treat it! They need to be able to identify it!!

Okay but I hate that OCD is SOOO unknown in the mental health space. Cus it took me until I was 26 to get an actual diagnosis, and that took effort on my part of actually learning what OCD is, due to the stigma. BUT ive never gotten any benefit from talk therapy, cus they also just handed me mental compulsions. One was big on the just think Happy Thoughts. It go so so bad that when I was dealing with grief and the worsening of my OCD from the stress I was giving myself panic attacks and not allowing myself to grieve and having such intense thoughts I genuinely thought I was going into psychosis. Anywaysss, thats what led to my diagnosis. Im so mad cus I had such severe symptoms as a child. I mean it was the 2000s so maybe I wouldnt have gotten the help I needed but ugh I wasted so much time treating my ocd like general anxiety and just feeding it

I fight my depression with positive action, but OCD heals with no action 😭 it's like I have to do nothing about it at the same time I feel like I have to move mountains over it.

My psychologist recently suggested this “rubber band” technique, and I was like… what??? As if the thoughts in my head weren’t already painful enough, now I’m supposed to hurt myself physically too? 🤨

This is why it’s so important to go to a therapist who understands OCD and why we need more clinicians who can pick out the signs of OCD vs anxiety so it doesn’t take years to get properly diagnosed. The therapy is different for OCD. It took me 10 years to get properly diagnosed with OCD 😭

I’m sorry WHAT ?? This is such a wild recommendation and completely wrong way to treat OCD, it infuriates me how many therapists “claim” to treat OCD but cause harm 😤

i was at a mental hospital for 8 month because of OCD . And the therapist there did the exact same. And he put me at 275 mg Zoloft, i was 13, thats really fucked up when i think back. Like it got better because of the enormous dose of medication, but as soon as i got off it, it got worse again. And im dealing with OCD again with new therapist.
