This has so much potential to be something like those games that with time it escalates quickly, vampire survivors, balatro, and such…. Imagine every run you get points and with enough points buy +1 sec slower melt and stuff like that or along the way having wax bath that run out and only recharge you a little but you can spec in to that with a talent tree and now the baths hive you much more wax etc

the checkpoints that force you to wait until you shrink feel too restrictive, atleast make multiple paths

Dark GXK :
if someone is too fast, the walls that block your head can be hard stops in the level, forcing them to just stand there until it burns enough, maybe a branching path or a mechanic that enables you to bypass it with some movement would be better or only in really tight areas where it's hard to go any faster than the predetermined level clear time.

can you implement a way to still go under smaller roof even when you're too tall like a slide or a side jump bc that mechanic could become frustrating for speedruner (or maybe a way to melt superfast would solve that problem)

The concept is really cool. But careful to not design things that goes against the core idea. Being stuck(too tall to enter a path) and having to wait cause you've been "too good" is bad design. Hope you avoid such design trap

Adding gaps that require you to wait if you are to big/to fast is terrible game design especially in a speed run game.

The concept is brilliant, but it really bothers me that the automatic candle extinguisher doesn't actually stop the flame - it goes out on its own. I think there’s a lot of (story) potential here - after all, it’s pretty cruel to have to live with a device attached to your body whose sole purpose is to end your life.

should have a button you can hold to melt yourself so you’re not stuck waiting to shrink at a wall or if you just want to go faster

gaps that require you to melt first are very bad design for speedrunning game

Not a fan of potentially being "too fast" and having to wait to melt down.
it's an interesting idea, but it means that in a real Speedrun all that matters is everything after that, as you don't gain anything from optimizations before that.
And it would really stop the flow of the level I think, if you want to ensure the player is a certain height I'd rather see it melt you down as you go through it

I do like the idea, but as someone else pointed out, it sounds like a possible frustration of being too fast then being forced to wait to be able to fit into small gap

A_Wet_Duck :
how are you supposed to speedrun if the reward for being fast is having to wait until you melt enough to fit through that gap...?

it would be cool if the Candle lits another candle at the end of the level

Love the idea, and the execution! In terms of trying to fit through gaps smaller than you, I think it’s a shame to stop the flow, perhaps the top of you could just get chopped off, so you can keep running? But maybe I’m speaking too soon, I’m not sure how this mechanic is actually like in play. :)

So you put a timer! But the genius part is that doesn’t feel like a timer, well played

I was trying to make something exactly like this for a while (albeit with a lot less experience), happy to see someone else able to execute on it really well!
