Here’s how and why you may need to clip your chicken’s wings 👇🏼 If you live in the suburbs and need to ensure your chickens stay on your property — for biosecurity, safety (your neighbors may have dogs that aren’t so chicken friendly!) and it’s just respectful to keep your animals off of someone else’s land. Or perhaps you live in an area with predators that will attack at any time of the day and you simply can’t let them out without supervision. There are good reasons for needing to keep your chickens contained. At our home, we allow our chickens to forage in a larger area under tree cover. This wooded area is fenced with 4’ welded wire fencing. It does not keep predators out but it does provide our chickens some extra space to do all their chicken things! Daisy has recently decided that the fence is optional but, it’s not. Sorry, Daisy. So I made decision to clip just 1 of her wings to keep her from hopping over it. ✨Note: I don’t do this clipping routinely. Only clip wing(s) as a last resort if there is a problem with jumping the fence and only trim the wings of the culprit, not the whole flock. Why just 1 wing? Clipping 1 of your chicken’s wings will throw them off balance while still having some ability to escape predators. How do you know what feathers to cut? As you can see in the video, there are 2 sets of feathers that make up the edge of Daisy’s wing: her flight feathers and her secondary feathers. You’ll want to cut the flight feathers about half way. I use the secondary feathers to gauge how far to cut. Questions? I’m here for it! Let me know in the comments! Thinking you may need to clip one of your chickens wings for the first time? Save this for later so you can refer back to it! #backyardchickens #flightfeathers #chickenkeeping #suburbanchickenkeeper #chickenfeathers #silverlacedwyandotte #chickenrun #trimmingflightfeathers
