This interview always struck me as odd, because as a student at Princeton, who’s getting Ollie pluses and his self proclaimed “pretty good at math“ any PDE that has a pure cosine solution is typically pretty straightforward to solve. It has to be a linear, constant coefficient (and typically homogeneous) PDE of the solution methods are pretty straightforward. The only way that I could see needing three pages of algebra for everything to cancel out and you’d pure cosine solution is having some initial data that picks out a specific eigen direction and then the rest canceling because of orthogonality? But anybody in a PDE class, especially at Princeton of all places should easily be able to see that since it’s one of the main topics that’s taught in in PDEs. but even then, yo Santa, his smartest fellow student didn’t identify the orthogonality and still did all algebra out explicitly? I can’t help but think that either Jeff is miss remembering or the situation is made up.
