Long story short there was a dog near the crime scene barking, the dog was the victims dog, it was microchipped and so they found the owners name, Mandy Reynolds, she lived 100 miles away with her cousin. They searched her apartment and it was completely empty. Some dude calls up asking to collect his dog and claims he is Mandy, detectives obviously question this as they know Mandy is dead and they also know that Mandy is not a male. Guy on the phone becomes rude and hangs up twice. They track his phone and find it’s the cousin. The cousin is then found driving Mandy’s car, they chase him and he runs into a grocery store and hides behind tinned goods. They arrest him and he is charged with her murder. He was already a wanted individual for his girlfriend being found dead in a ditch a few weeks prior. He sh*t Mandy in the head, in her apartment, put her body in a storage box and then drove 100 miles to dump the body and set it on fire. Without the dog the police would not have figured it out.

Sad what’s happened however some great communication and absolutely fantastic teaching from that officer without judgement or put downs to the other regardless of service length for that officer to learn to ensure as much evidential preservation as possible in a situation like this.
