@stephthearchaeologist: Pompeii was amazing to visit and I loved seeing a whole city and exploring it. I did not find this building amazing. #pomepii #History #historytok #archaeology #archaeologist
went to the pompeii brothel and saw the slabs of stone they claimed were "beds" for them and had to leave the building so i wouldn't start crying

My students sometimes want me to call them "sex workers." 🥺 I explain that term is to give dignity to modern women who chose careers in sex work. Not kidnapped and/or enslaved women & children who had no choice. 🥺 Sex trafficking is different than sex work.

The slave women didn’t speak the same language, the pictures were a menu so the men could just point to what they wanted

It should be mentioned more often the "glory of the roman empire" was built on the back of graping, unaliving and ransacking soldiers ordered by nobles. They took people, riches and more from one place to be sold in the empire.

One of the things I really appreciated when we toured Pompeii was that before we went in our tour guide gave us a serious talk telling us how these women were exploited slaves and that even though some images might be “funny”, the situation wasn’t funny at all nor was it meant to be taken lightly. We were all silent and solemn when we entered. Kudos to him.

… they didn’t even speak the language… it was a pictographic menu basically… it’s not funny it’s heartbreaking. Some of the fees… imagine someone selling you for less than a loaf of bread …

Oh, yes. I am sure there were *some* people willingly working in brothels but, like, if you see a brothel in history and it was NOT sacred prostitution (and honestly even then, it was same same but technically sorta different) you can basically guarantee the workers were slaves. I am not saying *women* because Romans and Greeks prostituted men and boys... like a lot. Also, very very often those prostitutes were children. Not teens. Like 10 year olds. The ancient world, as with our modern world, was often a terrible, terrible place.

Not only women! But children too! I went into a deep dive into Roman history and holy shit…. Little boys as young as 10 or younger… still haunts me. I cannot glamorize or really idolize anything from back in those days- nor should anyone if they actually know the history

And they were mostly litte girls who didn't speak the same language until they learned to speak or at least understand some of the local language because they had to.
