Armada Britania Raya berhasil mencegat kapal tempur Jerman Scharnhorst yang sedang berusaha menyerang konvoi Sekutu menuju Uni Soviet. Dalam pertempuran tersebut, HMS Duke of York bersama kapal penjelajah dan kapal perusak Britania berhasil melumpuhkan Scharnhorst dengan tembakan artileri dan serangan torpedo. Setelah mengalami kerusakan berat, Scharnhorst tenggelam di Laut Barents. Dari sekitar 1.968 awak, hanya 36 orang yang berhasil diselamatkan.
