@draleksandrabrown: Two dermatologists rate popular acne treatments, and a few of these aren’t even close. Adapalene (10/10): One of the best OTC acne treatments. This topical retinoid helps prevent clogged pores and treats both comedonal and inflammatory acne. Toothpaste (-100/10): Please keep it on your teeth. Toothpaste isn’t formulated for skin and can cause irritation without actually treating the mechanisms driving acne. Sulfur (8/10): An underrated acne ingredient with keratolytic and antimicrobial properties. It can be especially useful for inflammatory acne, although the smell and dryness aren’t for everyone. Azelaic acid (8/10): Helps with acne and inflammation while also targeting the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation acne can leave behind. Pore vacuum (just don’t do it): Suction may temporarily remove some surface debris, but it doesn’t treat acne and can cause irritation, bruising, and broken capillaries. Salicylic acid (8/10 + 10/10): A beta-hydroxy acid that penetrates into oily pores and helps clear comedones. Especially useful for blackheads, whiteheads, and oily acne-prone skin. Cycle it in, caution with dry skin. Hypochlorous acid (7/10): Has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and can be a useful adjunct, especially for sensitive or irritated acne-prone skin. I wouldn’t use it as the main acne treatment. Tea tree oil (1/10): There is some evidence for acne, but the data are limited and it can cause irritation and allergic contact dermatitis. We have much better options. Niacinamide (3/10 + 5/10): Can help with inflammation, barrier function, and oil production, but I consider it a supporting ingredient rather than a primary acne treatment. Which acne treatment should we rate next? @Dr. Whitney Bowe #Acne #AcneTreatment #Dermatologist #SkincareTips #AcneSkincare
