It’s thought that Moctezuma the 2nd gifted it to the Spanish upon arrival to Tenochtitlan and it was later returned to Charles the 5th (a Habsburg) who later probably gifted it to Austria/his family (who were other Habsburg) or that’s the running theory as how it go to Austria isn’t definitive until 1596 with a definitive inventory of Archduke Ferdinand the 2nd. Mexico has asked for the artifact back many times but the museum has repeatedly denied saying it’s too fragile to travel and its Austrian as it’s had ownership for centuries

📌 A quick note: I called it the “supposed Penacho de Moctezuma” because its connection to Moctezuma II has never been definitively proven. While it’s widely known by that name, many historians prefer to call it the Mexica feather headdress, since its original owner remains uncertain. What is generally accepted is that it’s an authentic Mexica featherwork masterpiece from the early 16th century. Regardless of who it originally belonged to, it’s an extraordinary piece of history, and I wanted to acknowledge the historical debate while sharing my visit.
