@dr.matthew.parker: Paxil isn’t a bad medication. In fact, it can work extremely well for the right patient. But compared to the newer antidepressants we have today, it’s one I reach for much less often. Between the higher rates of sexual side effects, more difficult discontinuation symptoms, and greater anticholinergic effects, there are usually better first-line options depending on the person sitting in front of me. That doesn’t mean no one should take Paxil. It means psychiatry is about matching the right medication to the right patient—not finding one medication that works for everyone. Have you taken Paxil?
