Every man in my family has been a coal miner to escape these hills and has been buried in the same ones. My boyfriend now works underground and I spend every night he’s gone worried to death, coal miners don’t get enough recognition what’s so ever.

I have mad respect for coal miners but these comments make me so sad. Coal mining as a practice needs to end. Its built on the blood of good people and its terrible for the planet. But blaming the workers or towns where its the only way to feed your family is not what we should be doing.

My pawpaw was a coal miner in VA. what these comments don’t understand is that there’s nothing up there that pays well. It’s their only options most of the time. My pawpaw didn’t know how to read because he had to go work In the mines as a young teen. He made my dad leave because he didn’t want him to work in the mines, same with his brothers and sisters. My pawpaw ended up getting black lung but he was my absolute best friend. My mom and dad even named me after him.
