Grew up in San Pedro where the ferries to Catalina leave from. Frequent visitor to the island. And it DOES feel like you’ve left the country. Scuba diving there is a surprise with very clear water.

my son went there in a field trip in 5th grade. They swam with dolphins and he got to pet a Mahi Mahi fish.

But you have to take a ferry or helicopter to get there. Lived in the LA area my whole life, just went for the first time this summer, because my kid had a field trip and my husband got sick the day before. But I would totally go back for a multi day visit, not 4-5 hours. My kid loved it and asked if we could go back for a vacation. But it’s still the Pacific Ocean so water even in the height of summer is still pretty cold.

I used to live there after college, Two Harbors part. I learned how to scuba dive directly in the ocean. Used to go to the interior, Sharks Cove where buffalos 🐃 dip their toes in the ocean.😂 I go there for work now 1x per month at the only school.
