@bymuseum: Daniel’s Answer to the King (1890) By Briton Rivière 📍 Manchester Art Gallery The lions are still beside him. But Daniel survived the night. This painting does not show Daniel entering the lions’ den. It shows the morning after, when King Darius calls down from above and waits to hear whether Daniel is still alive. Rivière never shows the king. He only shows Daniel turning toward the voice. The lions still have their strength. Their danger has not disappeared. But Daniel no longer watches them with fear. The miracle is not that the lions became harmless. The miracle is that their power was restrained. The king has the throne. Daniel has the peace. Was the miracle that Daniel survived, or that he was never ruled by fear? 👉 Follow @bymuseum for vivid stories and hidden meanings in classical art.
